I wanted to satirise the political system of North Korea and the suffering of the people due to its contradictions in the form of an actual sprayed ‘Pira’. ‘Pira’ refers to a leaflet used primarily by North and South Korea for political propaganda and military purposes.
In the early days of the establishment of the South Korean government, the term "Pira" referred simply to leaflets. However, its meaning underwent a transformation during the Korean War (6.25 War). During this conflict, the UN forces, particularly in the early stages, emphasized psychological warfare, distributing numerous "Pira" leaflets to the Communist forces. After the war, North Korea engaged in various activities such as espionage, incitement of residents, and dissemination of propaganda materials promoting communism and North Korea's advantages. These propaganda materials, scattered across South Korea, came to be known as "Pira".
With the borders closed, there is no better way to make North Koreans aware of their situation than with the South's bombing, which is a life-threatening escape. In order to get people to open it, it had to be the least Pira-esque design possible and make them want to open it, so I borrowed the shape of a postcard.
